“The Tell”

– Pastor Rusty – June 11, 2024

“Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast? Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it.” Gen. 4:6-7

The KJV renders this, “Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?” The consistent tell that all is not well in paradise is the “fallen countenance.” You think people can’t see it, but it is there. The fallen countenance is the easy tell something is out of alignment. When your life, your family, or your marriage is out of kilter with God (not the universe), your countenance is the dead giveaway. It is said that during the Persian empire (the time of Queen Esther) that it was unlawful for anyone to appear before the King with a downtrodden countenance, under the penalty of death. Even the Queen found it problematic to appear distressed before the King. It is said the eyes are the windows of the soul. I believe this is true. David said, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” Psa. 43:5. Allow God to restore your countenance. Place your hope and trust in the Lord and have faith in His mercy. His mercy endures forever! When you have an elevated countenance, you can function with natural discernment. Learn the principle of having a happy countenance. If you had one and lost it, you have lost the ability to accurately represent the Lord. It is hard if not impossible to re-present the Lord of Host from a position of disappointment, anguish, and or bitterness. Like Cain, the fallen countenance makes it impossible to offer true sacrifices unto the Lord. The fallen countenance is a reflection of the heart.

Pray this prayer with me. “Father, restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit (Psa. 51:12)… cause my spirit to be joyous, for your joy is my strength. Remove anger and complaint from my lips and cause me to rejoice in the God of my salvation! Amen. – Pastor Rusty
